I recently had the honor of photographing Sarah Grace’s Bat Mitzvah portraits at Congregation Shearith Israel, and the whole session was a quiet celebration of who she is: graceful, grounded, and so ready for this moment. Ahead of the big party, we paused and documented this moment that marks growth, identity, and heritage.

Sarah Grace wore an olive green dress that was effortlessly stylish and stood out beautifully against the warm tones of the synagogue. It was modern and classic all at once — much like the day itself.

A Beautiful Session at Congregation Shearith Israel

Congregation Shearith Israel is a lovely backdrop for Bat Mitzvah portraits. The stained glass windows catch the light in the most incredible way, and we leaned into that glow to create portraits that felt peaceful, authentic, and full of depth as Sarah Grace approaches reading the Torah before the congregation.

We also took portraits with the Torah — a meaningful tradition for so many families. Sarah Grace held it with quiet confidence, and the images from that moment are some of my favorites.

A Relaxed, Intentional Approach to Bat Mitzvah Portraits

If you’re planning a Bat Mitzvah in Atlanta, especially in-town near Morningside, Virginia-Highland, or Decatur, know this: your portraits don’t have to feel stiff or overly formal. My approach is calm, respectful, and personalized to your family. I’ll guide your child just enough to help them feel confident, while keeping space for who they truly are to come through in the images.

For Sarah Grace, we kept things relaxed, let her be herself, and focused on capturing honest moments — no forced smiles, no awkward poses. Just timeless portraits that feel like her.

When to Schedule Your Session

Many families choose to do formal portraits a few days before the service or earlier on the day-of, depending on timing. For Sarah Grace, we scheduled portraits a few weeks ahead of her celebration, which gave us time to slow down, take a breath, and really be present in the moment.

That space makes all the difference. It allowed us to get everything her family wanted — full-length portraits, shots with the Torah, stained glass, and some quiet in-between moments that you can’t rush or stage.

Let’s Document Your Milestone

Bat and Bar Mitzvahs only happen once — and the photos from that day become part of how you remember it, how you pass the story down. I’m based here in Atlanta and work with families across the city to create portraits that are grounded, meaningful, and visually beautiful.

If you’re planning your child’s Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Shearith Israel or any other Atlanta synagogue, let’s talk. I’ll help you create images that feel true to your child, respectful of tradition, and genuinely reflective of this milestone.
