So, you’re a single mom with a camera. Or maybe you’re about to be a single mom with a camera because you’re eyeing photography as your side hustle or your way out of the soul-sucking 9–5.

Either way—welcome. Pull up a chair, grab some coffee, and let me tell you how mini sessions (yep, those bite-sized mini photo shoots you see all over Facebook) became the tactical maneuver that made my life as a single mom work.

Not “barely hold it together with duct tape and coffee” work. I mean… actually work. Predictable income. Repeat clients. Flexible childcare. And yes—more afternoons with my kiddo and fewer moments crying in the bathroom because my calendar looked like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Childcare is the boss of my life. If you’re a single mom, you know. There’s no partner at home to “just watch the kids while I run out for a quick shoot.” Every work day means negotiating with babysitters, school schedules, aftercare, or—let’s be honest—Blippi on repeat.

Mini sessions save me here. Because I get to pick the days and times. That’s called batch working in business speak, but in single mom speak, it’s called I only need a sitter 10 Saturdays this fall instead of 22 random eveniny or really expensive full time care during the workday.

For example for my Fall minis, I typically book anywhere from 6-10 weekend mornings. These are either a 3 or 4 hour block. So, I’m hiring just that morning’s sitting and I am home by lunch time. If my little one wants to play outside and I can sit at a picnic table and start getting my memory cards onto my hard drive, great. If not, then I’ll check back in that night or the next time I have childcare.


2. Predictability = Peace of Mind

Before minis, my photography business felt like a roulette wheel. One month I’d pull in $35K, the next month $0 because everyone was at the beach.

Now? With mini sessions, I run the same sets each year (fall family minis, spring Motherhood + Heirlooms, Santa sessions, etc). My clients literally text me in August asking when sign-ups drop. They’re loyal because they know me, my work, and my vibe.

Predictability means I can actually budget. I know roughly what I’ll make from each season. That means I know if I can afford extra childcare, summer camps, or the beach trip so that we are vacationing when everyone else is!


3. Revenue Growth Without Burnout

Here’s what mini session education doesn’t always tell you: the magic for you as a business owner isn’t just in filling slots—it’s in filling them year after year.

Let’s say you make $100K this year. With a predictable client list, you’ll probably make the same next year if you just rinse and repeat. Want to grow by 10%? Add an upsell (like prints), raise your rate a little, or expand from one mini weekend to two. That’s it. Growth without adding stress ulcers. And, growth like a real business owner grows: over time, with a small percentage bump up year after year. Because, after all, as boss mamas, we need to be real business owners and not hobbyists.

And since mini sessions attract a wider client base (the lower price point makes them accessible to more families), you have way more potential to scale than if you’re only chasing high-ticket weddings. Personally, as a single mom, I’d like to offer a mass-appeal product in my business than wait for that one big fish each year. For me, it’s more peaceful. But, of course, there is more than one way to run a photography business so you just have to pick the path that is going to be good for you.


4. Batch the Backend (Not Just the Shoots)

The shooting days are only half the job—let’s be real. The backend work (editing, client communication, gallery delivery) can eat your life if you let it.

But minis streamline this too. Because the lighting/location is usually the same, editing gets faster. Galleries look consistent. And if you want to outsource editing? Minis are a dream. You can literally record one Loom video of your process and boom—hand it off.

Bonus single mom hack: I batch as many backend tasks as is humanly possible. All my client emails get templated. My editing is blocked into two big days. My freezer is stocked with pre-cooked chicken tacos so dinner doesn’t fall apart. Instead of a constant trickle of work, I get a season of push followed by a season of rest.


5. The Side Hustle-to-Full-Time Pipeline

Maybe you’re not ready to quit your job yet. That’s fine. In fact, I recommend not quitting until you know your numbers. Single moms gotta be strategic!

Mini sessions are perfect for building while you hang onto your 9–5. Why? Because they’re seasonal pushes. Fall, spring, Santa. That’s it. You can do those weekends while still clocking in Monday–Friday.

And here’s the kicker: since minis are repeatable and predictable, you’ll know exactly when you can leave the 9–5. You’ll have proof of income before you hand Brenda from HR your resignation letter.


6. Editing Doesn’t Have to Eat Your Life

Let’s talk editing. Minis = same location, same light, same vibe. Which means presets actually work. Outsourcing is easier. And consistency is a given.

I’ve built a whole editing flow that I can hand to an assistant if I want. But even when I do it myself, it’s faster than a wedding ever was. Weddings were like, “Here’s 12 lighting conditions, 500 candids, and one uncle who insists he’s a photographer too.” Minis? “Here are 200 shots in the same golden hour field. Go.”

  • 20 minutes + 2 digitals = $250–$350 in most markets.
  • Add-on prints, albums, or digitals for upsell opportunities and get your average client spend to at least the $500 range.
  • Never price so low you aren’t absolutely ecstatic you found this business model every season!

The easiest way? Email your list. Your past clients are GOLD. If they loved their photos last year, they’ll come back this year.
